Instead of continuing to write fun but light Hopey and Maggie punk rocker stories, Jaime here describes the chain of events leading up to the senseless and undramatic death of Speedy Ortiz, the younger brother of Izzy, a previously minor character. We're also introduced to Ray, a friend of Doyle's, and Maggie's little sister Esther. The characters in L&R have never seemed more real, the art is wonderful, and the story is very good, too. Devoting a whole book to one brother was a good idea. Recommended.
