The UVA Disc Golf Course

In my years of playing disc golf aroud grounds I have seen many holes, heard of many others, and even thought of a few more. In the immortal words of Patrick Henry, "I know not what course others may take..." So, here's a collection of 21 which we play regularly starting and ending at Olsson Hall. If anybody out there knows of other cool holes, let me know.

Hole #1: Lampost behind Chemical Engineering
The first hole sets the tone for any good round of golf. This one drives down the side walk to the lamppost just behind the ChemE building. You must hit the metal of the lamppost. Incidently, red arrows indicate the tee or the pin.
Par: 5

hole #2: tee
hole #2: pin
Hole #2: Tree on Alderman in front of ChemE
This one starts on the concrete square near the pin for hole 1 and goes to the tree trunk around front of the building. A good hook shot is the key. This is a possible hole to get an ace, but long drives have a danger of going into the street.
Par: 3 (aced by Glenn Wasson on 9/28/98 & John Regehr and John Viega at other times)

hole #3: tee
hole #3: pin
Hole #3: plaque on the front of Thornton Hall
From the elevated position of the tree for hole 2 you drive down a dogleg right to the "Thornton Hall" plaque on the building front. Be careful as the street (to left in tee picture) is a hazard.
Par: 4

hole #4: tee
hole #4: pin
Hole #4: The courtyard archway
This one tees off across the street from the lawn next to Clark Hall, goes over the hill in the tee picture, through the courtyard at the top of the hill and out the archway at the far side.
Par: 5 (a good birdie opportunity for regular discs and an eagle opportunity for golf discs)

hole #5: tee
hole #5: pin
Hole #5: Indentation in the side of dorm
This one tees off from just through the archway for the last hole and ends with your disc going into the white bowl shaped indentation in the wall. The white arrow in the tee picture shows you where the pin is.
Par: 3

hole #6: tee
hole #6: pin
 Hole #6: Hume Fountain
This hole tees off right outside the indentation from hole 5 and ends with your disc resting the the fountain. It must rest in the fountain to count.
Par: 5 (good birdie chance for regular and golf discs)

hole #7: tee
hole #7: pin
Hole #7: Mailbox in front of Alderman library
This one starts in front of Hume fountain and goes across the grass to the mailbox by the road near Alderman library. When the postman is there (sitting and chatting as he does) we move the pin to the farthest newspaper box from the street.
Par: 5 (good birdie shot for golf discs)

hole #8: tee
hole #8: pin
Hole #8: Statue of Icarus (or whoever it really is)
This hole's tee is on top of the hill above the mailbox from hole 7 and it runs dogleg left to the statue of Icarus between Alderman and Clemons. You can hit any part of the statue including the base. An excellent hole to hit bystanders, so watch out.
Par: 4

hole #9: tee
hole #9: pin
Hole #9: Lampost behind parking garage
Oh this is a fun one! Tee off from the Clemons library roof aiming for the lamppost pointed to be the white arrow in the tee picture. Again you have to hit the metal, not the concrete base. Be careful, weak shots will hit the road below (a penalty stroke) and hook shots will go into the air conditioning unit for the bookstore (to the left of the arrow).
Par: 4

hole #10: tee
hole #10: pin
Hole #10: The tree in the V
Drive from the sidewalk next to the lamppost from hole 9, across the first field, through the row of tree and across the second field to the tree by the "V" in the dirt.
Par: 6 (good birdie chance for golf and regular discs)

hole #11: tee
hole #11: pin
Hole #11: TJ
The man, the myth, the mystery of TJ. Many a game has turned bad when TJ does not smile upon the golfer. What a hole! Drive from in front of the steps and hit the statue (not any part of the base, but the man himself).
"Join the Z society" by not clearing the steps.
Par: 3 (Aced by Glenn Wasson 7/26/00)

hole #13: tee
hole #12: pin
Hole #12: Art building door
Tee off from the first level of steps going up toward the rotunda behind TJ. The target is the door of the art building. Because we have nothing but respect for the wonderful people who work there (and their air conditioners), the side of the building is a hazard.
Par: 5

hole #13: tee
hole #13: pin
Hole #13: Tree from art building steps
Tee off from the steps to the art building door and aim for the tree pointed to by the white arrow.
Par: 3 (aced by Glenn Wasson 11/21/98 & 3/17/99)

hole #14: tee
hole #14: pin
Hole #14: Trashcan
Tee off from the sidewalk near hole 13 and aim for the white arrow.
Par: 4

hole #15: tee
hole #15: pin
Hole #15: Rotunda fountain
Drive from next to the trashcan and put your disc in the fountain. The question is always to try and go through the two sets of columns or over the walkway on top.
Par: 5 (good birdie opportunity for regular discs and an eagle shot for golf discs)

hole #16: tee
hole #16: pin
Hole #16: Homer
Ah, the lawn... the pure driver's hole. Limber up your arms and drive from the rotunda steps, down the lawn to the statue of Homer at the other end.
Par: 7 (Regehr and I have both got 4s and I've seen eagles with regular discs)

hole #17: tee
hole #17: pin
 Hole #17: The ampitheatre
Drive from the brick patio above the ampitheatre and try to hit the far right door.
Par: 3 (whole bunch of aces here)

hole #18: tee
hole #18: pin
Hole #18: Lamppost out of the ampitheatre
Drive from the ampitheatre stage to the lamppost on top of the hill by the white arrow. Watch out, there's street (water) to the right and behind. This used to be a pipe about half way up the hill, but a round of construction removed it.
Par: 3 (a tough birdie)

hole #19: tee
hole #19: pin
Hole #19: Brown College Archway
Drive from the top of the stairs beyond the lamppost, through the farthest arch from the street, down the archway and out the last arch. Its a little tough to explain, but the whole disc has to go out the last arch to finish the hole. We invented this hole recently to have something to play on the way back to Olsson.
Par: 6

hole #20: tee
hole #20: pin
Hole #20: Arch #2
Start from behind the sidewalk after the last hole and drive over the hill, across the grass and through the arch. The disc must pass both sets of pillars to hole out. This is another recent addition.
Par: 3

hole #21: tee
hole #21: pin
Hole #21: Tree across from Olsson Hall
A nice long drive down the E-School corridor to the small tree across from Olsson Hall. Look out for the hazard just behind it. This one used to be the front door of Olsson, but we moved it to the tree. This hole completes the circuit and ends our course.
Par: 6
total par: 92

Grounds Course Map:

Hopefully between this and the pictures above you'll be able to figure out where the holes are.

A note about pars:

These pars we based on what a group of players thought were reasonable scores using regular ultimate discs. Those playing with golf discs should be able to score much lower (see records).
